The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is now required for most visa-exempt travellers entering the United Kingdom, including Portuguese citizens. This guide covers who needs it in 2026, how to apply, and what to do if your application is refused.
Who needs the ETA in 2026
You need a UK ETA if you are:
- A Portuguese citizen or other EU/EEA/Swiss national entering the UK for short visits.
- A visa-exempt national (e.g., US, Canada, Australia, Japan) without a long-term UK visa.
- Travelling to the UK for tourism, business meetings, short study (up to 6 months), or transit.
You do not need an ETA if you:
- Have a valid UK visa.
- Hold a British or Irish passport.
- Have UK settled or pre-settled status.
Cost and validity
The ETA costs £10 as of April 2026. It is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires, whichever is sooner. During that window it permits multiple entries, each up to 6 months.
How to apply
Apply via the official UK ETA app or the GOV.UK website. You will need:
- A valid passport.
- A photo of yourself (selfie or uploaded).
- A credit or debit card.
- An email address.
Processing time
Most decisions return within minutes to 3 working days. Budget at least 72 hours between applying and travel — and longer if you are applying on a weekend or holiday.
Common reasons for refusal
- Previous UK immigration breaches.
- Serious criminal convictions.
- False information on the ETA form.
- Confusion about which visa or authorisation you need (e.g., applying for an ETA when a full Standard Visitor Visa is actually required).
When an ETA is not enough
An ETA does not authorise:
- Paid work for a UK employer.
- Study programmes longer than 6 months.
- Marriage or civil partnership ceremonies in the UK.
If any of the above applies, you need a different visa category — we can advise.
