Starting in late 2025, travelers from visa-free countries will need Schengen ETIAS authorization to visit the Schengen Area.

What is Schengen ETIAS?

Schengen ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is a travel authorization system being introduced by the European Union to strengthen security and improve border management while facilitating legitimate travel to the Schengen Area.

Similar to the US ESTA system, ETIAS will pre-screen travelers from visa-exempt countries before they arrive in Europe, helping to identify potential security risks while allowing most travelers to continue enjoying visa-free access.

3 things to know about ETIAS

  1. Valid for 3 years or until your passport expires
  2. Allows multiple entries
  3. Stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period

ETIAS requirements

To apply for ETIAS authorization, you will need:

  • Valid passport from an eligible country
  • Valid email address
  • Credit or debit card for payment
  • Basic personal information
  • Travel and employment details
  • Background information (criminal history, health, etc.)

Who needs ETIAS?

ETIAS will be required for citizens of countries that currently enjoy visa-free access to the Schengen Area, including:

  • United States
  • United Kingdom
  • Canada
  • Australia
  • Japan
  • South Korea
  • And approximately 60 other visa-exempt countries

EU citizens and those with Schengen visas will not need ETIAS.

When will Schengen ETIAS launch?

The rollout of ETIAS has been delayed multiple times. The current plan is:

  • Late 2025: Launch of the EU Entry/Exit System (EES)
  • Early 2026: ETIAS goes live, around six months after EES

The European Union has promised to provide plenty of advance notice before ETIAS becomes mandatory, so travelers can prepare accordingly.
