Getting married in the UK? The UK Fiance Visa lets you enter the country to marry your British or settled partner and start your life together.
What is UK Fiance Visa
A UK Fiance Visa allows you to come to the United Kingdom to marry or enter a civil partnership with your partner who is a British citizen, Irish citizen, or settled in the UK (holding ILR or Settled Status).
You must get married within 6 months of arriving in the UK. After your marriage, you can switch to a UK Spouse Visa, which allows you to live and work in the country long-term.
UK Fiance Visa requirements
To qualify for the UK Fiance Visa, you must:
- Be 18 or older (both partners)
- Have met in person
- Be in a genuine and lasting relationship
- Plan to marry within 6 months of arrival
- Intend to live together permanently in the UK
- Have a sponsoring partner who is British, Irish, or settled
- Meet the financial requirement of at least £29,000 per year
- Prove your English language ability at A1 level (rising to B1 level from January 2026).
- Have adequate accommodation for both of you (and any children)
How to apply for UK Fiance visa in 6 steps
- Apply online
- Pay the visa application fee
- Book and attend your biometric appointment
- Prepare and upload your supporting documents
- Wait for your visa decision (usually 2–3 months)
- Travel to the UK and get married within 6 months
Applying with children
You can include dependent children under 18 in your UK Fiance Visa application if they are unmarried and rely on you. However, your sponsor must meet a higher income requirement:
£29,000 for you
- £3,800 for the first child
- £2,400 for each additional child
Good to know
- You cannot work or claim benefits on a Fiance Visa
- You must marry before your visa expires
- You can extend or switch only after marriage
- Your visa can be refused if you don’t provide enough proof of your relationship or finances
